Five Yoga Concepts That Are Just Plain Wrong
Religion
Yes, there seems to be a deep connection between yoga and religion, especially religions like Hinduism and Buddhism, but that connection is not in every practice of Yoga. There are many schools of thought, including ones that deem Yoga as mere relaxation, or just a good work out at the gym.
That said, be prepared to go up against people's silly ideas and prejudgements.
Relaxation
Many people think that engaging in Yoga will automatically loosen the screws in their minds. They will become capable of (be in danger of) flopping into near insensitive states of vegetation and cannot be roused by earthquake nor hurricane.
Well, in truth, there are slow AND fast styles of Yoga. Further, many people report extreme excitement of the mind, or, at the least, a mind which emptied of various distractions, becomes loose and fast and seems to move faster.
Flexibility
Yes, it is absolutely true that you are not allowed to do a class in Yoga unless you have been kicked out of cirque du soleil for being too much of a contortionist.
No! It's not! Contrary to popular belief, those amazingly pretzel like human beings running through poses at the head of your Yoga class were, once, just as stiff and rigid as yourself. And if they can do it...why not you?
Females Only
Yoga is definitely for females only. There were never any male practitioners of Yoga in the history of the world. All those guys with beards fro India who are credited with starting Yoga? Those are really woman who knew and practiced the 'beard breathing mantra.' It's absolutely true. Furthermore. Men are an inferior species who only do Yoga so they can aspire to be women. And they only do Yoga in closets, with no lights, and the door locked. And€¦.
Weight loss
The last wrong myth in Yoga is that Yoga promotes weight loss. Yoga, as an exercise, even if it works you deeply, is just not cardio enough to promote weight loss. The truth is that one needs a combination of correct food and the right kind of exercise to lose weight. in a Yoga class you will sweat, and you will lose water, but you'll drink it again, and there goes your weight loss.
That said, eat right, no synthetics, and you will experience some weight loss. How much depends on such a wide variety of factors that we hesitate to make any estimates.
