Staff Supervisor Responsibilities
- Staff supervisors engage in the process of hiring new employees by developing the appropriate job description documents to acquire applicants. The staff supervisor screens the available applicants, conducts interviews and follows up on all references. Based on an applicant's qualifications, the staff supervisor determines whether the person is suited for the particular job.
- Supervisors provide training for new employees to learn their job functions and all office and company policies. The supervisor may also provide training to an employee who is struggling at work, pursuing this option before moving toward other possible actions, such as switching the employee to a different position.
- Staff supervisors conduct employee performance evaluations. If the employee has met or exceeded job expectations, the supervisor communicates such exceptional performance to the employee. The staff supervisor also informs employees of unsatisfactory performance. Counseling and further instruction give the employee direction to improve.
- Companies have policies and procedures for all employees to follow. A staff supervisor enforces these policies, including prohibition of unethical behavior. If the employee continues to show problems, the staff supervisor orders disciplinary actions such as placing the employee on probation for a specific period of time. If problems persist, the staff supervisor may terminate the employee or recommend termination.
