Using a frozen, crumb-coated cake, apply a smooth layer of frosting. As the icing begins to freeze on the cake, take a small spatula and run it under hot water. Leaving the spatula slightly damp, smooth any rough edges on the cake. Wipe the spatula clean frequently and repeat smoothing with the hot spatula until a solid foundation of frosting is formed. Place the cake in the freezer and allow the frosting to dry thoroughly.

Mix the royal icing with the desired icing colors. The product should look similar to glue. If the consistency is too thick, add a few drops of vodka. If it is too runny, add a few sprinkles of powdered sugar. Be certain to mix plenty of each color, because it is difficult to get an exact color match if you have to make more. Place a warm, damp cloth over any icing you're not using to keep it from drying out.

Use the small paint brush to paint the desired texture designs. Use one color at a time and remember to keep the brush and icing container damp by using the cloth to cover anything not in use. Use the brush to create lines, indentations, even complex patterns. An X-Acto knife can be used to create more intricate designs. Once an area of color is dry, proceed with adding the next desired color or detail.

Add layers of texturing only when the prior details have set. If you keep the cake out of any humid or warm areas, royal icing will dry in about 30 minutes. To create more dimension, add another layer of the same color icing. For instance, to detail the top of repeated heart shapes, paint a second or even third coat to the top of the heart and gradually blend it to the bottom.

Use fondant or modeling chocolate for a large textured background or foundation of a wedding cake. Both substances can be stretched, flattened and texturized with cake-decorating tools. Use a large rolling pin or a sheeter to make the desired surface size for covering each layer of cake. Use a lightly painted layer of vodka on the cake to attach the finished product. Use the paint brushes to paint on any details with either the royal icing or with a mix of dry food coloring and a few drops of vodka.
