Lanseria International Airport

Lanseria Airport started out as a grass strip airfield about 30 years ago, the brain-child of two Pretoria pilots - Fanie Haacke and Abe Sher.
The land was originally bought by Krugersdorp and Roodepoort Municipality together with the Transvaal Peri-Urban Board and contracted to Lanseria Management Company on a 99 year lease since 1972.
In 1991 it was sold to private investors.
The airport was officially opened by the Minister of Transport at the time, Hannes Rall, on the 16th of August 1974.
Soon after it's opening Lanseria Airport hosted the Air Africa '75 (in 1975).
This event was the first time South African buyers could select aircraft and the aircraft equipment from companies located in the US, Canada, the UK, and France.
A very proud fact for the airport concerns Nelson Mandela: When the former South African president was released from prison in 1990 he was flown to Johannesburg landing at Lanseria Airport.
It might have started out as an air strip but it has evolved with time to now have the status of an International Airport and also be the busiest airport in Africa.
