How to Make a Homemade Pinata
- 1). Choose a balloon. You can use a regular balloon, a long-narrow balloon or a cartoon-shaped balloon. You can also put balloons together to create a shape. Attach posterboard to the balloon to create more shapes, if desired. For example, you can form cone shapes from large sheets of construction paper or posterboard and attach it to a balloon to make a princess pinata or add several cones for traditional Mexican pointed star pinata.
- 2). Cut or tear the newspaper into strips that are about an inch wide. You don’t need to measure them, just estimate.
- 3). Create a paste by mixing 3 cups of water with 2 cups of flour. You can also simply water down white glue.
- 4). Cover your workspace with newspaper or plastic. Wear an old shirt or a smock. This is a messy project, and it is not easy to get dried glue off things.
- 5). Drag strips of newspaper through the paste and then apply to the balloon and posterboard if you added shapes. Do this a strip at a time. Repeat until the entire shape is covered with at least three layers of newspaper. The more layers, the sturdier the piñata will be. Leave a small, palm-sized area uncovered so you can add the candy.
- 6). Let the pinata dry. This will take at least one full day.
- 7). Use a pin to pop the pinata when it dried.
- 8). Add candy and toys to the inside of the pinata through the hole you left.
- 9). Cover the hole with a piece of cardboard and masking tape.

Paint the pinata and decorate. You can use stickers, crepe paper, streamers, ribbon or any other decorations of your choosing.
