How to Make a Hawaiian Room for Children
- 1). Identify the room's color scheme. A Hawaiian-themed room can accommodate a variety of color preferences. Hawaii evokes a sense of relaxation and calmness, so choose light shades of colors, such as bright yellow or orange and sky blue or grass green. Keep the room bright and cheery, especially for a younger child. If you're artistic, paint a mural on the wall of the ocean or a surfer. Alternatively, purchase bright, stick-on wall decals.
- 2). Focus on floral prints. The hibiscus is a common Hawaiian flower that you can find printed on many accessories, from bedding to curtains. Stick with the same floral theme throughout the room to create a uniform environment, keeping color coordination in mind as well.
- 3). Purchase casual furniture. Choose light colored woods with simple lines or even wicker furniture. Accent a small couch with a complementary slipcover or choose floral seat cushions for chairs. Purchase a wooden toy box, for younger children, and paint it or get decals to stick on it featuring Hawaiian flowers and colors. An older child may want her dresser to coordinate with the theme or may find it useful to have a desk in her room, complete with floral designs on the drawers and surface.
- 4). Add accessories to the room. Spice up plain nightstands by adding a Hawaiian place mat or a layer of bamboo on top. Bamboo can be added all throughout the bedroom as well, even for the shades on the windows. Add a bright floor rug with a floral print to the center of the bedroom. You can also string up seashells around the room. Purchase plastic vases with fake Hawaiian flowers to set up through the room. Look in stores for a white noise machine that has the sounds of the ocean as an option, to enhance the audio effect.
- 5). Finish the decoration process by adding rocks, sand or seashells around the room in various containers. Spice up picture frames with shells or stickers that fit into the theme. Purchase lamps that have an island feel, such as a brightly colored lava lamp. Hang old surfboards on the walls for an extra touch.
