How to Build a Water Bucket Fountain
- 1). Look around the yard to locate an area with easy access to an outdoor electrical outlet, which is required to power the fountain pump. Dig a 2 to 6 inch deep hole in the location using a shovel. Dig the bottom of the hole at an angle, which tilts the bucket and fountain forward approximately 45 degrees. Place the 5-gallon bucket “A” into the hole.
- 2). Dig another hole directly in front of the first one, making it deep enough so that 5-gallon bucket “B” fits into it with the rim flush with the soil line.
- 3). Pick up a brick and place the fountain pump mechanism on it. Wrap a piece of string or rubber band around both objects to hold them securely tougher. Then place the brick into the bottom of the 5-gallon bucket “B.”
- 4). Cut off an 8-foot length of 1/2-inch diameter plastic tubing and insert one end onto the outlet on the pump mechanism.
- 5). Place a piece of galvanized wire mesh on top of bucket “B” and trace around the bucket rim using a marker. Pick up the mesh and cut around the line using tin snips. Then use pliers to bend down any sharp-pronged edges that remain.
- 6). Thread the plastic tubing through the wire mesh circle and place the circle on top of the bucket “B.” If needed, cut a hole in the mesh using tin snips to accommodate the tubing.
- 7). Pick up bucket “A” and drill a hole in the bottom of it using a 1/4-inch diameter drill bit and a drill. Thread the other end of the tubing up through the bottom of the hole and place the bucket back into the hole so it slants forward toward bucket “B.”
- 8). Press plumber’s putty around the hole inside bucket “A” and then apply silicone caulk around it to waterproof it.
- 9). Turn on a garden hose and fill both buckets with water. Plug the fountain pumps electrical cord into the electric outlet to start the pump. Lay decorative stones around the fountain area to improve the appearance as desired.
