The Ozone Layer - What"s the Story? Are We Doomed?

103 9
I remember hearing as a child that the ozone layer was being eaten away by chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and horrible things would happen to us and planet Earth as a result if we didn't do something.
If you recall, upper atmosphere ozone protects us and the earth from UV radiation from the sun, which can cause skin cancer.
Ground level ozone in contrast is a dangerous lung irritant.
Well, we have taken some steps, reducing emissions and banning the use of various fluorocarbon gasses, including a world wide on production and use of CFCs way back in 1987, but is it enough and perhaps more importantly than any opinion, what is the current state of the ozone layer? Ozone and the ozone hole caused by CFCs seem to improving.
The ozone hole is slowly closing.
Sure this is a good thing, right? Well, scientists don't agree wholly on much of anything, and now apparently there is some concern in the scientific community that increased ozone levels are leading to increased cloud cover in the Antarctic, or perhaps they are leading to decreased cloud cover.
Cloud cover effects temperature, and various scientific factions seem to believe that the increased ozone levels will either help slow down global warming and climate change or speed it up.
Data is incomplete on both sides.
So the experts disagree on ozone.
They agree ozone levels in the upper atmosphere are returning to more normal levels since CFCs have been banned, but they can't agree on whether it's a good thing.
