Sizing Up The Talent: with Patrick Fisher of SportsMeasures
SportsMeasures provides sports metrics across conferences, divisions, leagues, and seasons. The site's goal is to deliver an objective illustration of the versatility and depth of unbiased athletic performance measurement.
Patrick Fisher, founder of SportsMeasures, has had an affinity for measurement from an early age. This love of measurement was matched with his enjoyment of sports and sports statistics. His older brother William knew of these characteristics and was learning educational measurement testing theory at The University of Chicago and had introduced Patrick to objective measurement in a context that was very understandable - the game of baseball. "Fast forward to the Fall of 1988 and I enrolled at UChicago in the same graduate program as William," says Patrick. "Where I began to study measurement and how I could apply it to sports. I've been conducting research into measuring sports performance ever since. I have a passion for putting things in rank order." In 1993, Patrick graduated from Chicago with a Master of Arts degree in Education, with a specialization in Measurement, Evaluation and Statistical Analysis. His master's thesis is titled "Measuring Sports Performance: The Case of Baseball."
Today, Patrick's company, SportsMeasures, is the primary online resource delivering sports performance comparisons among a variety of men's college and professional sports through unique scientific measurement methods. Patrick says that no matter the sports organization, SportsMeasures can find a solution to any metrics problem they may encounter. "My website details the most commonly debated issue in sports today - ranking teams from top to bottom. Anyone can contact me (phone or email at the bottom of the article) about any measurement, assessment, or evaluation problem they are facing and we will discuss this issue with them to start the process of designing a solution to their problem." explains Patrick. "I have thought about many different measurement issues in sports. I have solved a lot of those problems in my head. I just need to collect the data to create the ruler to measure the variable."
Patrick says that most fans watching sports quantify what they see on the playing field or court and that people generally have a rating scale in their minds that discerns a 'good play' from a 'better play'. "The problem arises when you attempt to equate your mental rating scale to my actual rating scale. That is where my data analysis skills and knowledge come into play." says Patrick. "I can take the information from various...
