About Electricity Safety Tips

    The Facts

    • Electricity is brought in from live current wires, usually running down your street on power poles or in the ground. Your home is connected to these wires via a large transformer, usually on the side or the back of the house, which dulls down the wattage of the electricity to the 110 rating most U.S. homes use (Europeans use 220). This transformer then connects to your fuse box, which can be anywhere from right next to the transformer to your garage or basement.

    Features

    • The fuse box is the brain of your home electric network. Wires go from the box to all parts of your home, powering your plugs, appliances, air conditioning and so on. Major appliances will have their own switch in the fuse box, while several plugs or small light fixtures can share one. If one of these fuses overloads, the fuse box will shut down power to the area.

    Risk Factors

    • Working with electricity isn't something that should be done alone or by beginners. Even those who know what they're doing can get hurt or even killed. However, if you're determined to install a new switch or a new light fixture in your home, make sure you follow these few tips.

    Function

    • First, always make sure the fuse to the area you're working on is shut off. Check the fuse box and see if the switches are labeled. If they are not, it's simple trial and error; shut them off one by one until power is off to the area. Second, work with rubber gloves. Rubber gloves will help insulate you from a small shock (though only up to a point). Third, follow all directions that come with anything you buy to help guide you through the installation. Finally, keep a fire extinguisher near by for when you turn the switch back on in case of a bad installation that results in a wire spark.

    Expert Insight

    • Live wires should never be exposed to a live electric wire. Make sure your hands are dry when you handle wires, and stay away from any standing water.
