Windows XP Install Problems: Can't Find the Previous Operating System
- 1). Begin the Upgrade installation process. When it halts and notifies you that it can not find the previous operating system, insert the disc for the previous version of Windows, e.g., Windows 95, 98, 98 Second Edition, Me or 2000.
- 2). Press "Enter" and follow the onscreen prompts.
- 3). Choose an installation partition. For an ordinary, clean install or upgrade to Windows XP, simply select the first option, which is usually the "C" drive. If you wish to set up a dual boot on your system, you will need to create a new partition at this time by pressing "C."
- 4). Select the file system you wish to use with the arrow keys. Select NTFS for its better security. If, however, you are setting up a dual boot with more than one operating system and wish to be able to access the same files through each, go with FAT32 instead. After you have highlighted your choice, press "Enter."
If you decide to change the file system from what is was previously, you will next be prompted to format the hard drive by pressing the "F" key. - 5). Allow time for the upgrade to complete. When it finishes, your computer will automatically reboot.
- 6). Eject the disc from the drive as Windows boots from the hard drive. Follow the remainder of the onscreen instructions to customize your graphical user interface and set up hardware devices.
