How to Prune Rhododendrons in the Spring
- 1). Inspect the shrub perimeter and interior for dead, diseased, discolored, broken or abrading branches and foliage.
- 2). Cut away all compromised plant tissues that you find. Cut the branches on a gentle bias down into healthy living tissue and just 1/4 inch above a viable leaf node or bud.
- 3). Pull all of the deadwood or diseased clippings out from the shrub canopy and up from the soil surface to prevent the decaying material from breeding disease. Shred and compost or discard the cuttings away from the shrub site. Keep any diseased cuttings out of the compost pile.
