How to Detach a Trailer Hitch From Your Car

    • 1). Park your car on a level surface. Turn off the engine and engage the parking brake.

    • 2). Look underneath the car where the trailer hitch is attached and locate the bolts attaching the hitch to the frame of your vehicle. Some hitches use two bolts in a line and some are attached with four bolt plates.

    • 3). Clean the bolt and nuts of any road grime with a wire brush as best as you can.

    • 4). Coat each bolt with rust dissolver. You can find rust dissolver at any auto parts store, and any brand will do. Pour or paint the dissolver onto the bolt with the applicator brush in the top of the cap. Strike the bolt with the handle of your socket wrench. This will create a vibration that will help the rust dissolver work down along the length of the bolt. Wait 15 minutes before proceeding.

    • 5). Hold the socket wrench in place on one of the bolts. Slide the end of your steel pipe over the handle. This increases the length of the handle of your wrench and increases the leverage force you can apply against the bolt. Turn the wrench counterclockwise until you feel the bolt "break free." Remove the pipe from the handle of the wrench and continue removing the bolt with the socket wrench only.
