Military Training for Civil Unrest
- Military forces are actively involved in training exercises to cope with civil unrest. The U.S. Northern Command, for example, has more than 4,000 troops who are prepared for this.
- Operation Vigilant Guard is a yearly training program for National Guard troops that is carried out by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Troops are trained in scenarios that range from bomb attacks at railroad stations to coping with deadly diseases that could sweep through the human population if left unchecked.
- Unlike regular training provided for troops for missions abroad, domestic military exercises train troops to have more of a passive role, with a general focus on providing assistance to local agencies. For example, troops at Fort Stewart are trained to work with the U.S. Forestry Service to remove fallen tress and other debris from blocking access to roadways.
