CBS Chicago reported that data released by the insurance company Allstate ranked the safest driving cities nationwide, with Fort Collins, CO beating out Boise, ID as the safest driving city in the United States. Drivers in Fort Collins averaged one wreck about every 14 years, making it 28.2 percent less likely that they will be involved in a wreck.

Where Does Chicago Rank On The Safest Driving List?

Chicagoans average one wreck every 8 years, unfortunately making it over 25 percent more likely that Chicagoans will be involved in a motor vehicle accident. Obviously, it is imperfect to compare a city the size of Chicago with that of Fort Collins, which has a population nearing 150,000. When Chicago is compared with nine cities with populations above one million, Chicago comes in fourth, according to CBS. Of the cities with populations above one million, Phoenix, AZ is the safest city to drive in, with drivers there averaging a wreck nearly every 10 years. Philadelphia is not a good place to commute by vehicle, averaging one wreck every six years.

So this obviously begs the question, which is the most unsafe city to drive in? The accolade for worst driving city goes to Washington, D.C. Drivers in Washington D.C. average one wreck every 4.8 years, so drivers there are 109 percent more likely to get involved in a wreck. What is the lesson? If you find yourself driving a vehicle in the Washington, D.C. area, watch out!
Indicators of risk are the number of claims in your zip code, according to Des Toups of CarInsurance.com. With the higher claim rates, comes a corresponding rate increase with your insurance carrier. According to Toups, €the average full-coverage premium on a 2012 Honda Accord in Fort Collins is $904, using an average of rates from six national carriers. In Philadelphia, it's $2,818.€

This data released by Allstate is definitely intriguing and gives us all a fresh perspective on where our cities stand in relation to others. However, it is important to remember that no matter the odds, it does not negate the fact that the risk is still there.
