How to Hook Up a Webcam to the Internet
- 1). Connect your webcam device to your computer. You will need a spare USB port on your computer. Check the back of the machine if you cannot find an open port elsewhere.
- 2). Insert the disc that came with the webcam and allow it to install and configure your webcam. The installation process is different for every type of camera, but it is usually quick and self explanatory. If you do not have the disc, go to the webcam manufacturer's website and see if the files are available for download. Alternately, some webcams are considered "plug and play," and Windows will recognize the camera and set it up automatically with no other input from the user.
- 3). Sign up for an account with a free Internet streaming service, such as Justin.tv, Own3d.tv or Livestream.com.
- 4). Check your streaming service's instructions for information about starting the webcam stream. For example, on Justin.tv, click the "Webcam" link on the Justin.tv front page. Most streaming services detect your webcam automatically.
- 5). Share your broadcast by sending the link to your potential audience. You can find the link by adding your user name to the end of the site's URL. For example, if your user name is "janesmith" and your chosen streaming service is Livestream.com, "http://www.livestream.com/janesmith" will bring up your stream for your audience. If this link does not work, refer to your streaming service's documentation.
