Alternatives To Fosamax (part 1 Of 2)

102 5
By the time people become worried enough about Fosamax"s side effects that they seek the advice of a Fosamax femur lawyer, they also want to know whether they should continue using Fosamax. The Rottenstein Law Group isn"t a medical group, but we do have some information for those wishing to avoid femur fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).
First, see your doctor if you have felt any symptoms of thigh pain or suffered a femur fracture, or if you are concerned that Fosamax will damage your bones rather than help them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recommended that everyone stop taking Fosamax, nor has Merck or any other manufacturer removed its products from the market, and no Fosamax recall is yet in effect. That said, your doctor might recommend the following alternatives to Fosamax: non-bisphosphonate medications; hormonal replacements; natural remedies; or other preventative measures.
Although Fosamax is one of the most commonly prescribed osteoporosis medications, there are others that can help, though they are typically directed to women rather than men as osteoporosis is more common in women. One group is selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) with raloxifene (sold as "Evista") being the most common example. These drugs mimic estrogen"s effects on maintaining healthy bone density. SERMs also occasionally cause hot flashes, and doctors do not recommend people use it if they have blood clots. Another drug your doctor might recommend that only received FDA approval in the summer of 2010 is denosumab (sold as "Prolia"). Denosumab targets a protein (RANKL) that causes bone destruction.
There are many other options for those interested in switching from Fosamax. In Part 2, we will discuss hormonal therapies, natural remedies, and other preventative measures in place of Fosamax.
Fosamax isn"t nearly as safe as Merck, the medical community, and federal regulators previously thought. Already Merck is paying large sums to Fosamax ONJ victims. If you are experiencing thigh pain or have suffered a femur fracture and you are interested in finding out if you are eligible for compensation, contact the Fosamax femur lawyers of the Rottenstein Law Group for a free confidential consultation.
