How do I Guard the Unknown Soldier Grave?
- 1). Enlist in the U.S. Army.
- 2). Travel through the ranks between Private (E-1) through Sergeant First Class (E-7). A sentinel is selected from this range of ranks.
- 3). Request to join the 3rd U.S. Infantry, also known as "The Old Guard." The U.S. Army selects sentinels from this infantry division, which is based at Fort Myer, Virginia. The requirements to enter "The Old Guard" are stringent. The website tombguard.org lists these requirements:
1) Clean military and civilian criminal record
2) A 30-inch waist and between 5-feet by 11-inches and 6-feet and 4-inches
3) Minimum score of 250 on the Army Physical Fitness Test
4) Put forth a "soldierly appearance" in Army blues.
In addition, you must serve at least six months before you can be considered for a guard position.
