Lysodren Benefits
- According to RxList, the Internet Drug Index, most cases that benefit from Lysodren show improvements within 3 months, but about 10 percent of patients need longer to respond (see Resources).
- Early diagnosis and treatment improve the potential for a good clinical response to Lysodren, which can initially be shown by reduction in tumor size.
- With the reduction in tumor size comes a decrease in pain and weakness, along with an increase in appetite back to normal.
- Cushing's disease also causes thinning of a dog's hair, and this often is reversed after several months of treatment with Lysodren.
- According to veterinarian Mike Richards at the Vet Info website, Lysodren or other drug treatment does not prolong lifespan in dogs with Cushing's disease, but does improve quality of life. These dogs can live happily for years on intermittent treatment with Lysodren (see Resources).
- One particular complication of Cushing's disease is excessive drinking and urinating, including incontinence. Richards notes that Lysodren treatment actually can be credited with prolonging a dog's lifespan when statistics include early euthanasia due to incontinence.
