How to Build a Natural-Looking Waterfall
- 1). Survey the space to determine how large or small you are going to make the waterfall. When selecting the space where the waterfall will be built, keep in mind the overall objective you are trying to achieve. If you are planning to have a stream of water that travels to a pond, you will need to have ample space to achieve the overall design. Decide if the waterfall will be built into or above the ground.
- 2). Excavate the area. If you have decided to place your rocks down into the ground you will need to excavate the ground by digging out any grass and dirt as well as any existing bricks or concrete from the area. If you plan to add multiple ponds, you will need to create a slope of at least 2 inches between the ponds for maximum sound quality.
- 3). Place the plastic pond in the space and position the plastic pond liner on top. Place a layer of gravel all around the perimeter of the pond. Place the pump basin into the gravel on the top edge of the pond and place the pump inside the basin at the back, usually closest to the power source. Fill the basin with enough water to submerge the pump. Plug the pump into the power source to check if the pump is working properly. If it is working, unplug the pump while you continue to work on the waterfall.
- 4). Place large and small rocks as well as plants all around the perimeter of the pond as well as around the pump basin at the back. This will hide the pond liner and disguise the pump. It will also give the waterfall a more natural look. Place large and small rocks inside the pond to create a downward slope. Fill the pond with water to the desired depth, then plug in the pump. Adjust the rocks until you have achieved the desired look and sound of your waterfall.
