Generic Xalatan Eye Drops for Dogs
- The active ingredient in Xalatan eye drops is latanoprost ophthalmic solution. Generic forms of Xalatan are advertised as Latanoprost eye drops.
- Latanoprost eye drops work to reduce pressure, a condition called "ocular hypertension," and increase drainage in the eye. This can be symptomatic for dogs with glaucoma.
- Eye pressure and lack of drainage are found in both human and canine patients with glaucoma. Glaucoma is typically considered incurable without surgical intervention. The use of Xalatan or Latanoprost eye drops helps to alleviate some of the painful symptoms associated with glaucoma.
- The dosage for generic Xalatan in dogs is similar to humans. Unless advised otherwise by a veterinarian, place a drop in the affected eye daily.
To administer, pull down the lower lid and squeeze a drop into it. When the drop is in the eye, keep the eye shut for a minute to ensure that the medication doesn't leak out. - Do not use more than the recommended dosage of generic Xalatan. Overuse of the medication will reduce its effectiveness over time. Consult a veterinarian if using any other eye medications for your dog. If an eye infection or swelling occurs in your dog's eye after using generic Xalatan, discontinue use and seek medical attention.
