How to Troubleshoot Windows Updates Not Installing in Vista
- 1). Ensure that you have an Internet connection and that Microsoft's website is up (see Resources).
- 2). Restart your computer to check if any previously downloaded update needs installation. Many updates acquired from Windows Update require a restart for successful implementation.
- 3). Check if there is sufficient disk space on your Windows (usually C) drive. Load "Windows Explorer" by clicking the "Start" button and typing "Windows Explorer" without quotes in the search box. In the "Windows Explorer" window, right-click on that drive on the left side and click "Properties." If most of the pie graph is filled with blue, clear some space by deleting unnecessary files or uninstalling unused programs in the "Programs and Features" section of the Control Panel.
- 4). Load "Windows Update" again from the Start menu and click the "Check for Updates" button. Check all of the Windows Updates that you want to install and click the "OK" button.
- 5). Click the "Try again" button if Windows Update displays an error, to bring up the license terms agreement. Accept the license agreement to let Windows Update download and install the update.
- 6). Click the "Restore hidden updates" found on the left pane to see any updates that you previously hid. Select any updates that you want to install and click the "Restore" button.
