How to Plant and Grow Clover Seeds
- 1). Purchase clover seeds from a commercial source. White clover, or Trifolium repens, is a common species for home use. It can grow in a wide range of conditions, and can tolerate close mowing.
- 2). Score the planting area in spring or summer with a rake to ensure the clover seeds can make contact with the soil.
- 3). Load a seeder with the appropriate amount of clover seed. A concentration of 2 oz. of clover seed for every 1,000 square feet should be sufficient for clover to become a companion plant for your ground cover. A concentration of 8 oz. of clover seed per 1,000 square feet should allow clover to become the dominant plant in that area.
- 4). Add at least three parts sawdust by volume to the seeder for each part of clover seed. This allows you to distribute the tiny clover seeds evenly. Add an organic fertilizer such as Milorganite to the seeder according to the instructions, usually 25 lbs. for every 1,000 square feet. This allows you to plant the clover seeds and fertilize them in a single pass with the seeder. Mix the contents of the seeder thoroughly.
- 5). Spread the mixture in the seeder over your planting area. Keep the ground moist until the clover establishes a root system.
