Care for Postpartum Headache
- Obviously, if you could, you would. The only thing you can do is try to relax whenever you can---whenever the baby is sleeping. Try a cold compress on your forehead for a few minutes while relaxing on your bed.
Aromatherapy can also be helpful, and it is easy to do. Essential oils of lavender, peppermint, geranium, bergamot and rosemary can be used in several different ways. You can make your own blend of these oils and mix them into almond oil to make a lotion that you can use on your hands, or you can mix them into witch hazel and put the mixture in a spray bottle to use as a body spray or room freshener. Or you can even put the oils directly into a diffuser. You could also place a few drops of these oils into a bowl of water from which you make a headache compress. You can use essential oils as often as you need to. - Your body has been through incredible changes in the past nine months, and it has great need for proper nutrition to get back to normal. Things like mild dehydration or hunger can bring on a headache, so make sure you are eating and drinking properly. It can be easy to forget to eat and drink when you're so busy, but you simply have to take care of yourself. Even if you have to nibble because you can't seem to get an opportunity to sit down and eat, do it. Take the time to peel that orange or make toast, even if you can't make dinner. Eat a snack before going to bed to help level out your blood sugar, because low blood sugar levels can also be a cause of headaches.
- If you aren't breastfeeding, you have more options for treating your headache. Caffeine may do the trick, and you can take ibuprofen or Tylenol as directed on the package. A glass of wine might help you relax. Have your mate massage some of the essential oil-infused lotion into your shoulders and neck. You may find that dipping your feet into cold water while applying heat to the back of your neck may just jolt the headache right out of your system.
There is a chance that if you had an epidural during labor and delivery, you may have a leak of spinal fluid that may be causing your headache. One indication of this is that your headache worsens when sitting and is relieved when lying flat. You should see your health care provider if you think this may be the case.
Relax? Yeah, right.
