How to Type Scientific Formulas on Microsoft Word 2003
- 1). Open Word 2003. Click "Insert" in the top menu bar and then click on "Object."
- 2). From the "Create New" tab of the "Object" dialog box, scroll down to Microsoft Equation Editor and double-click it (or click it once and then click on OK). If you do not see Microsoft Equation Editor, skip to the second section below. For ease of use, once Equation Editor is installed on your computer, you can create an icon on your Word toolbar to click to activate the equation toolbar.
- 3). A text box to type an equation in and a floating equation toolbar will appear in an Equation Editor screen. This editing screen has its own menu bar to adjust format, style and size.
- 4). Type letters or numbers into the text box. Click the appropriate symbol on the toolbar to insert it into the text box as part of the formula.
- 5). Click outside the text box to exit the equation edit mode. You can then click inside or on the border of the text box to edit it.
- 1). Close all Microsoft Office software and then insert the Office 2003 installation CD-ROM into your disk drive. If using a company computer operating off a network system, contact your local help desk for assistance in adding Equation Editor.
- 2). Click on Windows Start button (lower left of screen), Control Panel and then "Add/Remove Programs." Locate Office 2003 or Word 2003 in the "Currently installed programs" box, click once on the software name and then click on Change.
- 3). Locate and click on the box next to "Add or Remove Features" on the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box. After clicking to fill the box, click on "Next." A Custom Setup dialog box may appear. If it does, click in the "Choose advanced customization of applications" and then click "Next."
- 4). Scroll to Office Tools and click the plus sign ( + ) to expand the list. Click the arrow next to Equation Editor. Click "Run from my Computer" from the options and click "Update."
- 5). Click "OK" and close out of the Control Panel. You can now restart Word.
- 1). Right-click in an open area to the right of the main menu in an Word document, like next to Help.
- 2). Click "Customize" from the pop-up menu.
- 3). Click "Insert" in the Categories box and then scroll down to Equation Editor in the Commands box.
- 4). Click the words "Equation Editor" and while holding down the mouse button, drag the pointer to a location on your toolbar to drop the icon. For example, drop the icon next to the Excel Worksheet icon button.
- 5). Close the dialog box. Click the newly created button to produce the Equation Editor toolbar.
