    • 1). Lay plastic sheeting on the floor and over any furniture that is remaining in the room to protect them from the texture process.

    • 2). Add water slowly to a bucket of joint compound and mix it with an electric drill with a stirring bit installed. Keep mixing until the joint compound is the consistency of thick wallpaper paste.

    • 3). Install a long-knapped paint roller onto a paint roller applicator. Attach an extension pole to the bottom of the handle.

    • 4). Submerge the paint roller into the bucket of joint compound, pull it out and tap it on the rim of the bucket to knock off excess material.

    • 5). Roll the joint compound over the ceiling's surface beginning in a corner and working your way across to the other side of the room. Ensure that you cover the entire surface with an even coat of joint compound.

    • 6). Dip the paint roller into the bucket every couple of feet. The long knap of the paint roller will create the desired effect on the ceiling's surface. Allow the joint compound to dry for at least 24 hours before painting if that's your plan.
