It seems as if green tea has gotten all the attention lately because studies have suggested it could help prevent cancer and heart diseases.
Now it seems as if its black teas turn to be in the spot light.
Four teas come from the camellia sinensis plant black tea, green tea, white tea and oolong teas.
Any tea has been shown to be a healthier choice than the multitude of soda choices available on the market, in addition to having just as much caffeine, teas are rich in antioxidants, especially a helpful one called catechin.
Studies on the ever-growing-in-popularity black teas have shown that it contains a cholesterol reducing property, helps lower the risk of stroke or heart attacks by strengthening artery walls in some people and improves the function of blood vessels and reduces the risk of coronary diseases.
Black tea contains compounds theaflavins and thearubigens which are thought to provide health benefits just as good as or better than the green teas; however it is an acquired taste.
It can be spicy or sweet with the smell of orchids or just a smidge of chocolate.
Although research is still in its infancy, a long-term research program from the Netherlands National Institute of Public Health and the Environment discovered a correlation between people who regularly consumed black tea and reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The study looked at foods that were high in flavonoids and antioxidant benefits.
Approximately 70 percent of the flavonoids came from black tea while a small percentage came from fresh vegetables and fruits.
Another study conducted by a doctor from Boston's School of Medicine supported these results.
The doctor followed 66 men for four months who drank four cups of black tea or received a placebo each day.
The doctors finding was that drinking the tea could actually reverse the effects of an abnormally functioning blood vessel that could lead to a stroke or heart attack and moreover, the tea drinkers improved their blood vessel functioning system which was visible - via x-ray - within almost two hours of drinking the dark liquid.
And one study of over 3,000 Saudi Arabia adults - where green tea is frowned upon over black for the majority of the people - discovered that regularly drinking black tea could reduce the risk of coronary heart diseases by at least 50 percent.
More recent studies of the benefits, one done at Rutgers University concluded that black tea may help prevent prostrate, breast and stomach cancers.
Some of the chemicals found in the black brew are shown to slow down the growth of a cancerous tumor.
A compound called TF-2 makes the cancerous cells want to "commit suicide" while the normal cells remain intact and unharmed.
Black tea helps people burn more fat, prevent tooth decay - however it will stain teeth, may be a good arthritis soothing medication or rub and can lower cholesterol.
