How to Dispose of Household Batteries
- 1). Take your used batteries and store them in separate plastic bags until you can get to the store. You don't want to put a bunch of batteries together or they could explode if any of them have any juice left in them.
- 2). Go to the website Earth 911 (see Resources). Type in household batteries in the "Start Recycling" box and then place your zip code in the box next to it. Then press "Go" and the site will come back with a list of stores and locations where you can drop off your batteries.
- 3). Find out your town's hazardous waste pick-up day. You should get a flyer in the mail once per year with this info on it. If you don't still have it, you can call and ask when it is. Then place your batteries in a container on the side of the road on the scheduled day.
- 4). Take your household batteries to your local recycling center. The center has ways to safely dispose of the batteries without hurting the environment.
- 5). Ask the dealer who sold you the batteries if they accept used ones for recycling. Most stores such as Radio Shack that sell batteries also accept used ones.
