African Ethnic Hairstyles
A History of Variety
- Over the years, Africa has had many tribes that exhibited different hairstyles. While the Masai warriors parted and braided the hair in various sections, the Miango tribe created ponytails and covered them with headscarves. Within the various tribes, hairstyles represented status. Whereas a long, braided ponytail may have signified a high-ranking official, short Zulu knots may indicate peasantry. Dyed and stiff hairstyles were common in ancient Africa.
