    • 1). Measure the area of your window where you plan to hang the curtain rod. This will depend on the type of curtains you're hanging. Some are hung well above the window frame, while others are hung just above it. Your curtains might also be expanded a few inches beyond the window frame, or they may just cover it.

    • 2). Decide what type of curtain rod you want to use for your curtains. Curtain rods come in a variety of types. Decorative rods are meant to enhance the appearance of your curtains, while concealed rods won't be seen. Choose a traverse rod if you're hanging curtains that are closed with a wand or cord, and choose café rods if you're hanging café curtains.

    • 3). Choose a curtain rod that corresponds with the measurement you got when you measured the area above your windows where you're hanging your curtains. The general length for curtain rods will fall between 28 and 120 inches.

    • 4). Decide what size spacer you need for your curtain rod. The spacer is hardware that comes with a curtain rod and expands it away from the wall. This will depend on the type of curtains you're hanging and the look you want. Generally, spacers will extend your curtain rod several inches.
