XLS is a file extension that is used to create and modify spreadsheets. It is considered to be one of the best spreadsheet applications created by Microsoft. You can not only create spreadsheets here but you can also use the calculator to do your calculations as well as make graphs and pie charts out of the data that is available. It also includes pivot tables and a macro programming language known as VBA or Visual Basic for Applications. XLS files allow you to view the page in the form of a network of rows and columns. Apart from that the data in each cell may be related relatively or absolutely to the other cells of the spreadsheet. There was initially a conflict with the name Excel as there was some other company was making an application of the same name. But over time this issue has been resolved as more and more people have taken to XLS file formats to solve their daily accounting and billing needs.
XLS files can store data in various formats. The data can be stored in the binary format. It can also be stored in the Office Open XML format which stores files in new formats which are a part of Microsoft Office 2007. There are many applications other than Excel that have been used to open an XLS file. These include various other spreadsheet applications. ExcelPackage is one such application that has been designed to open XLS file formats. Apart from that these XLS files have also been copied on to web applications. This has been done using comma separated values as the tool for copying the XLS file directly on to the web application. ActiveX controls and Plugins like Adobe Flash Player are applications that have also been used to open XLS files.
