There's a reason why they have great tasting wines, and that is because Arizona vineyards take the time to do soil samples and figure out what grows well with the climate without having to try growing staple grapes. It doesn't matter what your thoughts are about what the wines in Arizona used to be because if you haven't been trying them lately, then you a missing a great deal of really good tasting wines.
Here are is a list of three Arizona wineries that you should definitely stop by.
The first one on the list is the Sonoita Vineyards, Ltd., which is found in Elgin and just about 50 miles away from Tucson. The vineyard was established by the father of Arizona viticulture, Dr. Gordon Dutt. It is said that the soil area of the Sonoita Vineyards is identical to that of Burgundy, France. This AZ winery has made several award-winning wines, and to make you want to taste their wines even better, they hold wine-tasting daily from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. except on holidays. You can bring with you some picnic lunch and enjoy their wines on the patio or just simply enjoy the view from the balcony. Each person pays $8 for the wine-tasting, but it's a fair price to pay to taste amazing wine.
After the Sonoita Vineyards is the Village of Elgin Winery, which, of course, is found in Elgin and is 55 miles from Tucson and 5 miles from Sonoita. The Elgin Winery is one of the Arizona vineyards that uses traditional techniques in producing their wines and is said to only have the capacity of 120,000 bottles. They are open daily from 10 A.M to 4 P.M for wine tasting and purchasing.
Next to the Elgin AZ winery is the Callaghan Vineyards, which is just a couple of miles east. This vineyard was founded back in 1990. Although you have to pay for the wine-tasting, it comes along with a nice wine glass that gives emphasis to a great experience. Their wine-tasting is open from Thursday to Saturday at 11 A.M till 4 P.M.
After the tour around the top three Arizona wineries, visit the town of Patagonia. In this town, you can purchase different kinds of wine from all of the Arizona vineyards while bird watching at the same time. Every Saturday morning, there are guided tours at the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, which allows you to admire and enjoy the beauty of the trail and its surroundings.
