How to Install a Radio Into a 1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition With JBL
- 1). Remove the grounding cable from the negative battery lead on the Ford's battery. The grounding cable connects the battery to the chassis of the Explorer for the purpose of grounding the electrical system. Use a 10-millimeter wrench to loosen the cable's clamp. Place the cable away from the battery until you are finished installing the radio.
- 2). Insert Ford DIN removal keys (special keys for removing radios) into the vertically stacked holes on either side of the factory stereo's face.
- 3). Pull the keys outward while pulling the stereo from the dashboard. The radio will slide from the mounting dock to allow you access to the wiring connected to the rear of the radio.
- 4). Disconnect the wiring from the stock radio. There are four connections. The antenna and power supply cables are single wires you can pull from the radio by hand. The speaker wires and amplifier patch cables are grouped in white plastic wire binders. Pull each group of wires by these bindings.
- 5). Connect the antenna cable and power supply cable to the new stereo.
- 6). Connect the speaker wiring group and the amplifier patch cables to a wiring harness adapter. The adapter will allow for a uniform platform for connecting various aftermarket stereos to the Ford's stereo wiring. Connect the wiring harness adapter leads to the new stereo unit.
- 7). Slide the new stereo into the mounting dock left empty by the removed factory radio.
- 8). Replace the grounding cable back around the negative battery lead post on the Explorer's battery. Tighten the cable's clamp with the wrench.
