    • 1). Respect others. The best and easiest way to earn respect from your peers is to show respect to them. Demanding respect or expecting it is unreasonable and ineffective. Always treat others as you would want them to treat you. Be polite, friendly and open to other people and their ideas. Set an example for others to follow. Relax and always do your best.

    • 2). Make an effort. Get to know your peers and take an active interest in their lives and interests. Get involved in activities with your peers at school or work. Ask them questions and seek their advice. Listen to what they have to say and be supportive and helpful. Consider their feelings when you make decisions. Give genuine compliments to others when they have done something well.

    • 3). Be a likable person. People respect those whom they admire, so it important to be the type of person others like. Avoid offending people with what you say and do and how you dress. Respectable people exhibit signs of intelligence, humility, patience, honesty and kindness. Exhibit good manners, offer compliments when necessary and be passionate about the things you care about. Show that you are trustworthy and modest. Confidence and a positive attitude also earn respect.

    • 4). Say what you mean and mean what you say. No one respects a liar or someone who is flaky and unreliable. It is important to mean the things that you say and to follow through when you say you will. Think before you talk. Communicate clearly and always be yourself. Being fake toward your peers or trying to be someone you are not will only cause your peers to question your motives and create misunderstandings.

    • 5). Accept criticism. It is important to remember that no one is perfect, including yourself. Graciously accept constructive criticism from your peers when it is offered. Accept their opinions and advice without arguing or being defensive. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and expose your shortcomings. This makes you much more endearing and respectable to others.

    • 6). Practice forgiveness. Forgiving others and yourself is important when trying to earn respect. It shows that you are mature and capable of dealing with problems, as well as understanding that people make mistakes. It is also important to apologize when you have done something wrong or offended someone.
