Painting Tree Wall Art

    • 1). Rent an overhead projector from a business or exposition supply store. Use a computer and printer to print out a tree mural for a wall. Select a picture that's wide and doesn't have ornate detail or tiny branches. Find a fun tree picture for a playroom, for example, by using pictures from online children's sites such as Disney.com, Highlights.com or PBSKids.org. Print the picture on a sheet of acetate paper, a clear paper that you can find at office supply or printing stores.

    • 2). Move all furniture away from the walls and push it to the center of the room. Cover the furniture with a dropcloth or old sheet to protect it from the paint. Place a 2-inch-wide strip of painter's tape between the wall and ceiling as well as the wall and baseboard. Set a dropcloth on the floor in front of the work surface and push it as close to the baseboard as possible.

    • 3). Plug in the overhead projector and place the acetate paper on top of the glass. Adjust the height and width of the image using the knobs located either at the top of the projector or on the side. Refer to the user's manual for specifics on how to adjust the height since each model is different.

    • 4). Outline the tree image projected on the wall using a piece of chalk. Don't trace around the leaves, but make sure to trace the branches and trunk of the tree. Turn off the projector once you've finished.

    • 5). Use a paintbrush dipped in brown latex paint to outline the tree’s trunk and branches. Use a wider brush to fill in the outline.

    • 6). Draw a teardrop shape onto a piece of cardboard to represent a leaf. Make sure the leaf’s size is comparable to that of the tree. For example, a tree that extends from the floor to the ceiling will need larger leaves than a small tree painted in the center of a wall.

    • 7). Cut out the center of the teardrop's outline using a craft knife. Use the cutout as a leaf template. Place the teardrop on the branches and trace around it with the chalk to create even and uniform leaves. Paint over the leaf outlines with green latex paint.

    • 8). Allow the tree to dry overnight before moving the furniture back.
