Winning at Texas Hold"em - All About Bluffing
Here are some guidelines for bluffing and not bluffing.
1. It's an especially bad play to try to bluff more than two opponents; one of them is sure to call your bluff.
2. Only bluff good players. The brain dead will always call your bluff. Your object is to confuse the good players, and keep them off balance.
3. Don't bluff with a hopeless hand. Bluff when you have some chance of having the best hand.
4. Consider bluffing if the last round of betting was checked around, but don't bluff if scary cards have shown up on the board.
5. Bluff when you want to imply that you've made your flush or straight.
6. Give the impression that you are a tight, aggressive player and your bluffs will be more successful since your opponents won't expect it. Even if the bluff doesn't work you've sent a message (the wrong message), and now your opponents are likely to call when you have a strong hand. When you've made your flush or straight and you bet, they think you are bluffing.
7. The general rule of betting is to show weakness when you are strong and show strength when you are weak. This should guide your bluffing strategy.
Some other considerations about when to bluff are: bluff with a weak hand to drive other players out of the game. To earn a free card bluff on the early rounds to prevent others from betting on later rounds.
Take into account your position when you consider bluffing. If you bet in the early position, your opponents will assume you have a good hand and are betting from strength. If your opponents check and you bet, they may think you are trying to take advantage of their show of weakness and call any bet you make. A really aggressive player may raise after your bet.
When all is said and done bluffing is rarely a good move in low limit Texas Hold'em games. However, there will be plenty of bluffing, just not by good players.
