Army has a diverse collection of vehicles at its disposal.
The most recognized Army vehicle is the HMMWV (high mobility multi-wheeled vehicle), or humvee, or hummer as its come to be known.
This vehicle is manufactured by American General in South Bend, Indiana where they also make postal jeeps.
The hummer is an amazing vehicle with numerous innovations that made it a natural choice to replace the jeep.
The hummer features an aluminum body that resists corrosion, A high mounted engine and drivetrain give it better ground clearance and the frame is a reinforced ladder frame to resist flex.
It utilizes a diesel engine and the civilian version has even seen turbo-charging.
The disc brakes are mounted inboard of the frame to both protect and aid in cooling while the hubs are each gear driven providing an amazing amount of torque.
The humvee is very versatile and capable of many functions such as a weapons platform, ambulance, troop or cargo transport, and many others.
There are a wide variety of combat support vehicles, one of the most common types centers on the family of HEMTT (heavy expanded mobility tactical truck) vehicles.
This is commonly referred to as the "dragon wagon" or the 8X8 meaning 8 wheel drive.
Other Army vehicles include: • M1A2 Abrams-the Army's primary main battle tank • M2A3 Bradley-the standard infantry fighting vehicle • M3A3 cavalry fighting vehicle • The Stryker • M113 armored personnel carrier • MRAPs-Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles Apache The US Army utilizes some artillery on tracked vehicles as well as a number of rotary wing aircraft like the Apache attack helicopter, the Black Hawk tactical transport helicopter, the Kiowa Warrior armed reconnaissance helicopter and the Chinook heavy transport helicopter.
