How to Clean Outdoor Fountains
- 1). Skim debris out of the water daily to avoid a blockage in the pump or lines.
- 2). Turn off the pump and remove it. Some pumps may have to be unplugged and others have an on/off switch. You should be able to slide the pump up and out of the brace.
- 3). Wipe the outside of the pump with a towel. Clean the intake and outgoing spouts with a toothbrush. Replace the pump and turn it back on.
- 4). Clean out the water reservoir with a clean cloth. If you have algae growth in it, use a wildlife safe cleaner to remove it (see Resources). Bleach isn't a good product to use, as it can harm birds and other animals.
- 1). Turn off the fountain pump. Drain the fountain completely. The method for doing this depends upon the model of fountain you have. Some fountains have a drain plug and in others, the water has to be pumped out.
- 2). Wipe off the pump and clean the spouts with a towel and toothbrush.
- 3). Clean the interior of the fountain using white vinegar and a soft brush. This is easier on the environment and more wildlife friendly than bleach. Get in the crevices and creases by using a toothbrush.
- 4). Dry the fountain, especially if it is a cement fountain. The cold weather makes water expand, which can crack a cement fountain.
- 5). Check the fountain once a week or after significant rainfall or snow. If you see water in it, dry it out.
