How to Remove Scratches From Fiberglass
- 1). Wash the scratched area with liquid soap and water.
- 2). Apply a nickel-sized portion of automotive wax to water-dampened buffing attachment of a dremel tool.
- 3). Turn on the dremel and buff the wax into the surface scratches on the fiberglass. You may have to go over the area several times to eliminate the scratches.
- 4). Unplug the dremel, remove the buffer and clean the buffing attachment with liquid soap and water.
- 1). Wash the scratched area with soap and water.
- 2). Apply a small dab of toothpaste to a micro-fiber cloth.
- 3). Dust the toothpaste with baking soda.
- 4). Rub the mixture, in circular motions, into the scratches. It will take lots of elbow grease to achieve a desired result. You may have to take a break and return to the project to give your arm a rest.
- 1). Apply a layer of gel coat over the area where the scratches were buffed. You can use a paint brush to apply the gel coat, but a compressor and a spray gun will result in a more pleasing result.
- 2). Keep the spray gun moving to prevent wrinkling of the gel coat. Allow the gel coat to dry according to manufacturer's specifications.
- 3). Apply a second layer of gel coat. Allow to dry.
- 4). Sand down the gel coat with 200-grit wet/dry sand paper so that one layer is effectively removed, leaving a single layer of gel coat.
