Liquid crystal display screens are very delicate and require gentle cleaning. While you may have been able to use glass cleaner and a rag on the old tube television to remove streaks and dust, newer LCD screens can be easily scratched and discolored by traditional cleaning methods. Using special cleansers and cloths designed specifically for the LCD screen is easy, inexpensive and saves the time, money and effort required to buy a new screen. - Avoid any cleaning products that contain ammonia, ethyl alcohol, acetone, toluene, ethyl acid or methyl chloride. These chemicals are too harsh for LCD screens and can cause streaks, discoloration and scratches which can be permanent.
- Never use glass cleaners, multipurpose cleaners or any type of detergent on LCD screens. Using a special LCD cleaning kit, which can be purchased from an electronics store, ensures damage-free cleaning.
- Do not use harsh cloths, sponges, paper towels, toilet paper or tissue paper. Only use ultra-soft cloths, such as the specialized sponges included in LCD cleaning kits.
- Never use any type of clothing to clean the screen. Be sure not to use your sleeve to dust the screen between thorough cleanings. For the most part any clothing items will not be soft enough to safely dust the LCD, and using any of these materials can scratch the screen.
