How to Locate a Vehicle That You Previously Owned
- 1). Obtain the old car's VIN. Locate your old car's registration or insurance card--the VIN is listed on these documents. If you have the number written somewhere in your own records, use these to obtain the car's VIN.
- 2). Go to an information site that provides a complete car history report, or a reverse VIN look-up service. One such site is information.com; another is CARFAX.com.
- 3). Enter the VIN into the appropriate box on the site and click "Submit" to obtain a complete car report or VIN report that includes the name and address of the owner of the car. The VIN look-up service will show only the current owner of the vehicle. A car report will show all past owners of the vehicle.
- 4). Use the information in these reports to locate your old car. Contact the owner listed by mail, or by telephone (if possible), verify if she still has the car, and explain your reason for contacting her.
