How to Use Geranium Oil for Pain Relief
- 1). Select a reliable source for geranium oil. Pure geranium oil can be found in health food stores or in the vitamin section of supermarkets. It can also be ordered online.
- 2). Purchase pure essential oil, not fragrance oil. This is oil that has been extracted from geranium flowers. Undiluted, it can be used for topical pain relief and to reduce external swelling and inflammation. As such, it has been incorporated into a number of self-care treatments, primarily dealing with injuries and ulcers of the skin. It has been used to treat burns, acne, lice, ringworm, shingles and chickenpox. As part of an aromatherapy regime, the oil is said to help alleviate stress and reduce anxiety.
- 3). To alleviate discomfort associated with skin conditions, apply a small amount of oil with a cotton swab to the affected area. Rub gently until the oil has been absorbed.
- 4). Allow the treated area to dry completely. Pain should subside within 15 minutes of application and relief can last from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the severity of the condition.
- 5). Reapply as needed. Geranium oil is nontoxic and nonnarcotic, so you can use it without restrictions.
