    • 1). Find a local charity in the Las Vegas area and verify that they accept cars as donations.

    • 2). Ask the charity to provide you with a copy of its IRS letter of determination verifying its tax exempt status.

    • 3). Get a receipt from the charity verifying the donation of the automobile. The receipt should include the charity's name, address, phone number and tax exempt number. In addition, the receipt should list the year, make and model of the vehicle donated; the approximate value of the vehicle; and the condition of the vehicle at the time of the donation.

    • 4). Obtain a certification of sale from the charity. Charities are required to provide you with this certification within 30 days of the vehicle sale. The certification must state that "the car was sold at arms length between unrelated parties," according to the IRS. In addition, the certification must indicate the value of the vehicle. If the charity does not sell the vehicle, it must provide you with a certification stating the intended use of the vehicle and confirmation that the charity does not plan to sell or transfer the title of the vehicle.

    • 5). Complete Form 8283 and attach it to your tax return with a copy of the initial receipt and the certification of sale from the charity. If the vehicle is worth more than $500 but less than $5000, complete Section A of the form. If the vehicle is worth $5000 or more, complete Section B of the form. In addition, if the vehicle is worth $5000 or more, you must have an independent appraiser certify the value of the vehicle at the time of donation and sign Part III of Form 8283.
