With a poor summer behind us, many families and holidaymakers are looking to Christmas and New Year to get away from the relentless British weather.
Here are five destinations that are proving popular this winter.
5.
Anchorage, Alaska.
If it's a real snowy winter you want, then Anchorage is a great destination for families.
For those eager for a holiday centred on fitness and recreation, the area offers several renowned ski areas such as the Hilltop Ski Area and the challenging Alyeska Resort.
The City of Lights and Flowers is also home to an abundance of wildlife including Moose, Bears and Wolves.
4.
Brisbane, Australia.
If skiing and snow isn't your scene then maybe a trip down under will suit.
Brisbane experiences its warmest temperatures (the highest recorded at 40.
2°C) at the beginning of the New Year, and is consequently popular with tourists drawn to the humid subtropical climate.
Boating, cycling and fishing are popular in Brisbane today, whilst some of the most popular areas of interest include the state forest and the worlds first Koala Sanctuary.
3.
Egypt.
Without needing to travel quite so far, Egypt offers many now classic holiday sights.
It is not as warm now as it is for the rest of the year, but the fewer crowds and prices reflect this.
However, the glory that the Nile delta has to offer is available all year round, with the Karnak Temple, Great Sphinx, Giza Pyramids and the Valley of the Kings all offering a holiday to remember for a lifetime.
2.
San Jose, Costa Rica.
For a slightly different winter holiday, the Costa Rican capital is fast becoming increasingly popular among tourists.
The city has a lively and bustling party atmosphere and rich art and culture, whilst the surrounding area offers rainforests, volcanoes and beaches all ripe for exploration by eco-tourists - as well as the countries seven wonders: Cocos Island, Arenal Volcano, Chirripo Mountain, Light Blue River, Tortuguero Canals, Poas Volcano and Monteverde Reserve.
1.
Interlaken, Switzerland.
At the heart of Switzerland is the Municipality of Interlaken, a haven for backpackers and those seeking a peaceful destination.
With a history in watchmaking, religion and the paranormal, today the breathtaking scenery of the Jungfrau Mountain and lakes Brienz and Thun are complimented by the options for a slightly more active escape by way of paragliding, skiing, and canyoning.
There are many beautiful hotels in Interlaken available for every budget.
