How to Boot a Recovery Disk for Windows XP
- 1). Adjust BIOS settings to start from the CD drive. Restart the computer. As it starts, press DEL to enter setup. If this doesn't work, try other keys or combinations. According to the Microsoft Support website, the F1, F2 or F10 keys provide entry on some computers. On still others you must simultaneously press "Ctrl" and "Enter"; "Alt"and "Enter"; "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Esc"; or "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Insert." Check your computer manual if you aren't 100 percent sure of which key or combination of keys to use.
- 2). Access the startup sequence settings. Press "Enter" to modify it. The plus (+) sign or minus (-) sign will allow you to scroll through. Scroll and select CD drive.
- 3). Press "Esc." Insert XP Recovery CD.
- 4). Select "SAVE AND EXIT SETUP." Confirmation to save to CMOS or similar will appear. Select "YES" or "y." Your computer will restart.
- 5). Follow the prompts. Once you reach the "Welcome to Windows" page, click "Install Windows XP."
- 6). Click "Upgrade" and hit "Next."
- 7). Accept the end user agreement.
- 8). Type in your product key.
