    • 1). Buy a trailer hitch package, if your Jeep Cherokee does not already have a towing package installed. Towing packages were not standard equipment on the 2001 Jeep Cherokee. You can get a trailer hitch package from U-Haul, your local Jeep dealer or a specialized towing shop. Prices for the equipment vary.

    • 2). Install the trailer hitch on your Jeep Cherokee's bumper, if you feel comfortable doing so. Specific installation varies by hitch, but instructions are usually included. Tools typically needed are a wrench and a screwdriver. If not, you can usually have it installed where you bought the equipment. Installation fees vary.

    • 3). Back your Jeep Cherokee up to the trailer or other item that you want to tow. You may need another person to stand outside of the vehicle to guide you as you back the vehicle up slowly.

    • 4). Attach the trailer to your trailer hitch. How you attach it varies by trailer connection. It can be as simple as slipping the trailer connection over the ball mount and securing it by clamping down the safety valves, inserting the safety pin and criss-crossing the chains. You must also attach the wiring from the trailer to the wiring harness on the trailer hitch. It should plug in easily. This connects the lights on the trailer to the lights on your Jeep, which means when you press the brakes, the brake lights on the trailer will light up as well.
