How to Fix a Tape Deck
- 1). Press "Play" and listen for a hum, if the capstan is not turning. The capstan is the two protruding pieces that turn the reels of your cassette. If there is no sound, the motor may be damaged.
- 2). Remove the casing of the tape. Simply remove the screws holding the casing in place. This will differ among machines.
- 3). Clean and lubricate the motor, if the playback time is slow. Remove any debris from the capstan attached to the motor with a brush. Check the bearings to see if they are tight or dry and lubricate them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 4). Check the wiring going to the motor for loose wires or any that look burned. Replace these wires as necessary.
- 5). Adjust the speed of the motor. Insert a small screwdriver into the speed adjustment opening on top. Turn in the direction of the arrows on the top to speed up or slow down the motor accordingly.
- 6). Open the motor, using a screwdriver, to remove the motor casing screws and look at the springs. Replace any springs that look worn or damaged.
