    LCD TV

    • The liquid crystal display is one of the more prominent television technologies available on the market. The LCD TV's front layer is made of etched glass, which holds the liquid crystals. When an electric current is administered, the liquid crystals move and allow specific types of light to pass through them. In the back of an LCD TV, some type of light is used to shine through the liquid crystals. This creates the image that you see on the screen.

    Plasma Screens

    • One of the primary competitors with LCD TVs is plasma technology. Plasma TVs have two different panes of glass that hold small pixels. The pixels are composed of gases that change when an electric current is passed through them. The primary difference with this type of technology is that the pixels actually live themselves when they are charged. The plasma TV does not require a back light of any kind. This creates a slightly different look when compared with the LCD.

    DLP

    • A the third type of TV technology is the digital light processing. The primary component of the DLP TV is the Digital Micromirror Device or DMD. This is a small light regulator that reflects light on millions of tiny little mirrors. The TV shines light on the DMD and the mirrors can change the direction that they are shining light up to 10 degrees. By changing the way the light is reflected, the image on the TV screen changes.

    Considerations

    • No single method of how a TV works is necessarily superior to any of the other methods. Each type of TV creates a slightly different look when it displays a picture on the screen. If you are choosing a television, do not only look at the type of technology that you are choosing, but also look at the important statistics of the device. For example, look at the refresh rate, the contrast ratio and the resolution to see which the TV will display the best picture.
