How to Install a New Liner in a Pool
- 1). Pour at least two inches of debris-free masonry sand inside the swimming pool's bottom track to give the liner a soft base. The sand also keeps the liner from shifting as the ground expands and contracts during the seasons. It also keeps rocks and other debris beneath the liner from doing damage.
- 2). Tamp the sand firmly into place. You should be able to walk on it without leaving tracks. Spray nut grass killer on the sand. If nut grass comes up through the sand, it can work its way through the pool liner and ruin it. Continue with the wall installation.
- 3). Build a cove, or angled section, around the base of the pool. This helps protect the base of the liner and must be in place. Either use sand to build up from the base to the wall or use foam pieces designed for the purpose.
- 4). Set the pool liner in the sun for a while to make it malleable. Inspect it for any damage from shipping. Determine where the skimmer and return holes should be. Follow the manufacturer's directions to punch them out.
- 5). Put the pool liner in place. Once it's inside the pool's frame, do not walk on it with shoes on. Work out as many wrinkles as possible. Add some water to the pool and continue working out the wrinkles. If the water level is uneven, pull back the pool liner at the low spot and add some more sand. Tamp it down well and cover it again with the liner.
- 6). Attach the pool liner to the walls. Some pool liners have a beaded edge held in place on a track. Others simply pull up and over the pool's walls. A third type of pool liner installs into a track with a J-hook. Finish filling the pool with water. Complete the pool installation.
