Education

• Those attending school in the United States must complete at least 60 hours of undergraduate, pre-medical education at an accredited college or university in order to achieve a medial license. Those doing undergraduate coursework abroad must complete the foreign equivalent of an American premedical program.
  
  Texan physicians must successfully complete medical school in the United States or Canada in order to fulfill medical license eligibility requirements. Those who attend medical school abroad must attend a program roughly equivalent to Texas medical school standards. The board maintains a list of pre-approved foreign institutions.
  
  

Exams

• In order to achieve a medical license in Texas, physicians must pass two examinations upon graduate from medical school. The first of these exams is a standard medical knowledge and practices test, such as the USMLE and COMLEX. The second is the Texas Medical Jurisprudence Examination, administered by Pearson VUE. You must receive approval from the Texas Medical Board to take this exam although the state does not administer it. A score of 75 or higher on the Jurisprudence Examination constitutes a passing grade. License applicants must pass each exam in three or fewer attempts.
  
  

Postgraduate and Professional Requirements

• All applicants for medical licensure must complete required postgraduate training in order to practice medicine in Texas. A postgraduate internship in a hospital or other medical facility is the standard way of addressing this requirement.
  
  Upon completing this training, physicians may practice medicine individually or pursue a residency in a specialty field. The board only licenses those of "good professional character" to practice medicine in Texas. Any applicant previously found in violation of the Medical Practice Act will not be licensed.
  
  

International Requirements

• Physicians from aboard or those who attended medical school in a nation other than the Untied States and Canada must submit to additional requirements. First and foremost, these applicants must have a demonstrable command of the written and spoken English language. These students must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and be eligible to practice medicine in the same country as their medical school. Lastly, these individuals must undertake a three-year postgraduate professional training program, as opposed to the standard one-year requirement.
